Ms. W's Classes Get Hands on Experience

This week in Ms. W's Medical Interventions class, students completed simulated genomic microarrays. This provided a two-color microarray experiment that examines differences in gene expression across four cancer patients. Gene samples that fluoresce yellow show similar expression as the Control cDNA, while red fluorescence indicates that the gene has increased expression and green fluorescence indicates that the gene expression is decreased. No fluorescence indicates that there is no expression.

Ms. W's Human Body Systems class learned how to use a Doppler ultrasound device and sphygmomanometer, you can do another calculation to assess cardiovascular health, the ankle-brachial index (ABI). To calculate ABI, a medical professional uses the Doppler ultrasound device to listen to blood flow while also measuring and recording blood pressure in the arms and feet. Measuring blood pressure in various locations of the body helps to monitor overall blood flow.
