West Branch Girls Basketball Team Honored for High Academic Success

April 28, 2022

Wednesday afternoon, the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association presented the Academic Team Award to the West Branch Girls Basketball Team.

"I am very proud of the team for what they have accomplished both on the court and in the classroom this season,” says coach Walt DeShields. “These girls are outstanding young ladies and have worked extremely hard in school to earn this award.”

The Lady Warriors earned the award with both their athletic and academic achievements. Nine players must be varsity letter winners in order to be eligible for the award. The top nine GPAs from the first semester of the school year of varsity letter winners are then ranked against the other qualifying teams across the state. The girls’ aggregate average GPA of 3.97, placed this year’s team as one of the top 5 girls basketball teams in the state for the award. The Ohio National Guard sponsored the team plaque presented to the team on Wednesday.

“I would like to thank both the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association and the Ohio National Guard for recognizing the importance of education in high school sports," says DeShields.

In the past, West Branch student athletes have had high GPA averages that earned team rankings in the top 10 or 20 in Ohio, but this year’s girls basketball team is the first to achieve a ranking in the top 5 for the state.
