The Ohio Department of Education will release the 2017 Ohio School Report Cards.  At this link, you will find spreadsheets which have district, school, community school, dropout recovery and prevention school, and career tech school grades, along with the Report Card Guide.

There are no new measures on the 2016 - 2017 report cards. Districts and schools are graded on six components - Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation Rate, K-3 Literacy and Prepared for Success. West Branch Launches Mobile App

Screen Shot 2017-04-17 at 8.03.52 AM.png

In an effort to improve communication the West Branch Local School District is providing parents, students and community members with a new way to stay connected with the schools. The district launched a free mobile app on April 27, 2017. This app allows users to receive customizable school news, school building and district calendars, push notifications, texts messages and more - all directly on their smartphone and mobile devices.

The “West Branch Local School District” app is available for download for iPhone and Android users in the App Store, and the online iTunes and Google Play app stores.  Parents are not required to download the app to continue to receive school communications, but app users have access to a number of tools that will make those communications more convenient.

Designed to make it more convenient and easier than ever for parents and families to stay informed the mobile app offers a regularly updated feed of important school news and events.  Users can customize the app by selecting the schools they are most interested i for news and updates. Users can also choose to receive push notifications to quickly get news and updates about school closures and emergencies, events and more.

It is our belief that our students are more successful in school when parents are engaged in their learning and school activities. With our new mobile app, individuals can stay connected with our schools and with the activities our students are engaged in every day.

Damascus PIE Sponsors Outstanding Thanksgiving Feast

Students at Damascus Elementary celebrated Thanksgiving as a Damascus Family on 11/19/15. The meal was prepared by cooks Kathy Reichenbach, Stephanie Dailey, and Tracy Muckleroy. The food was served by our wonderful parent group. The parents spent two weeks decorating the cafeteria as students attended as Pilgrims and Indians. The decorations were highlighted by a giant turkey that had each child's name on feathers by class. Carol Bradway coordinated the parents in set-up and clean up.

Statewide Testing Information
Ohio testing continues to change as we move throughout the year. Ohio students will no longer be taking the PARCC exams. All testing will happen through AIR, the American Institute of Research. This is good news for our students as they only need to learn one testing interface to complete the assessments. Testing time has also been reduced to better meet the needs of our schools.

The Power Point information below is from the Ohio Department of Education and explains the changes with testing. Please see your building's principal if you have any questions.

Science is Alive in West Branch!

Mrs. Scofinsky and Mr. Tucker co-taught a unit on motion to Grade 1 students. The unit combines Math and Science. Students learned principals of motion and distribution. The students initially had one long row of 24 connected scooters. Students discovered that the one long row of 24 could not be moved. The students could be moved in 2 rows of 12 and 4 rows of 6. Every student now knows that 4 sixes and 2 twelves make 24. They also understand the system of pulleys and motion.  Students made a  hypothesis and performed their lab to experiment with their hypothesis.

WEST BRANCH LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HOST “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT”

Looks can be deceiving.
That’s the message behind a unique traveling exhibit created by the Bath and Copley Township Police Departments. The display is called “Hidden in Plain Sight.” The departments constructed what appears to be at first glance the bedroom of the average teenager.  But amidst the clutter of clothing scattered on the floor, school supplies on a desk and personal care products on a vanity are more than 150 items that can actually be signals that a young person could be involved in risky, dangerous and even illegal activity.

“Hidden in Plain Sight” will be on display at West Branch Middle School, 14409 Beloit Snodes Rd., Beloit, OH 44609 on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.  Doors open for browsing at 6:00 PM with a presentation from 6:15 PM to 8:15 PM.   The exhibit is open to adults only.   There is no charge for admittance.

The audience is encouraged to explore and interact with items in the display which may be indicative that a teenager is involved in substance abuse, underage drinking, eating disorders, sexual activity and more.  Participants will be enlightened, educated and astonished.

The Goshen Police Department will also be involved in presenting the exhibit.  For further information, contact West Branch Middle School at (330)938-4300.

Ameri Corps Volunteers needed

How would you like to use your talents to read with our youth?  If you are out of college and need some student loan relief, then you may make a strong classroom helper. Maybe you are older and could use some income. An AmeriCorps volunteer makes $640.00 a month.

Can you find it in your heart to impact our youth?  If you can, please call Mrs. Mabbott at Knox (330-938- 1121) or Mr. Manley at Damascus (330-938-4500) for more information. Click the link below for more specific information!

St. Balderick's Update
Thank you all students, parents, and staff who donated to St. Balderick's, which funds for childhood cancer research. Damascus raised $1,311.52!!!  WOW!!!!! Students were allowed to wear "wacky " clothes to school for their donation. Since we exceeded our goal, Mr. Manley will be dressing up as a leprechaun to school on Friday, March 14. We had fun here at Damascus, and even better, we helped to make a difference. Thanks again!

More money will be coming by the end of the week. We have students selling purses, hair bows, and bracelets. All are made out of duct tape and bands. The students exemplify the giving at all our buildings!

Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities

Ohio weather is very unpredictable and we never know how many calamity days our school district will use.  Currently, the State of Ohio permits five calamity days that do not have to be made up.  In addition to these five days, West Branch has been granted an additional three days known as “Blizzard Bag” make up days.  According to current state guidelines, we are able to make up an additional three days by using “Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities.”

As of January 31, 2014, West Branch has exceeded the five calamity days allotted by the State and we are using Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities to make up work.  As of January 31, 2014, Knox students need to complete two blizzard bag day activities.  All other West Branch students need to complete one day of Blizzard Bay/Calamity Day activities.

Teachers have posted Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities on their web pages.  Students will have two weeks from the date of the school closure to complete the Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities.  Students who do not have access to the internet from home, will receive their “Blizzard Bag” assignments when they return to school.  If parents have questions or concerns, please contact the principal of your child’s school.

Report Card Date Moved Back

The second grading period report card will be carried home on Wednesday February 5, 2014 due to all the weather delays.

What 'Mother' Means

M... is for the million things she gave me,

O... means only that she's growing old,

T... is for the tears she shed to save me,

H... is for her heart of purest gold;

E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,

R... means right, and right she'll always be.

Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"

REGARDING: Teacher In-Service Day and Two-Hour Delays

West Branch Local Schools will follow an adjusted schedule for three days in the month of May. I wanted to get this out to all parents as soon as possible to assist you in your planning.

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2013: Students will not be in session on this day. The West Branch Staff will be engaged in School Safety Training that day. This is the ALICE SAFETY TRAINING that many of our neighboring school districts are using with their staffs.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2013 AND TUESDAY, MAY 14, 2013: West Branch Local Schools will follow a Two-Hour Delay Schedule these days. The State of Ohio has mandated a number of educational initiatives and the West Branch Staff will be working on those initiatives during these two days.

We appreciate the support and understanding of our parents as we engage in these important in-services for our staff.

Make Up Time for Days Missed

The West Branch Local Schools cannot go to hours until the 2016 - 2017 school year. Some school districts have transitioned to hours this year due to starting a new collective bargaining agreement.

According to the Record Courrier (1/6/15)..."The change in state law from days to hours does not apply to school districts with collective bargaining agreements that were executed prior to July 1, 2014."

This means that the closure for 2/20/15 means another make-up day.

Click below for the district calendar adotped in February 2014 for make-up details. The district can add June 4th or look at extending days.  For those districts on days, the state allots FIVE calamity days!

SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED ON GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2015 UNDER THE ADOPTED CALENDAR

A special thanks to the Damascus PIE for a donation of $4700 for a transverse climbing wall.  The wall will open with a Math and PE lesson on February 19, 2015.  The lesson will focus on physical well being and math.

First Grade students will be climbing the walls to demonstrate what they know about the attributes of 2D shapes.  PE Teacher Chris Tucker and the Damascus PIE recently installed a 4 panel Traverse Wall in the Gym. Groups of 4 students will analyze  the traverse wall filled with shape magnets and determine whether to sort the shapes into two or three groups based upon the defining attributes of the shapes.  Defining attributes include sides, angles, and vertices. If they use non-defining attributes, such as size or color, they will have to revise their plan and move the shapes again.

A Charlie Brown Christmas at Damascus Elementary

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) is the first prime-time animated TV special based upon the comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. The Damascus Elementary cafeteria was transformed by parent volunteers who wanted to provide a special holiday meal for the students. During the meal the children were greeted by “Snoopy” himself.
In recent weeks the students participated in a competitive coin drive where they raised approximately $2500.00 dollars.  Additional community donations increased the total to approximately $5000.00 dollars. All contributions are distributed back to the community to guarantee qualifying families have a joyful holiday with gifts for their children.

It's All Greek to Me!

Students in Mrs. Edie and Mrs. Ski's classes dressed up as Greek gods and goddesses to celebrate how well they learned their Common Core Standards involving references to Greek Mythology in literature and understanding common Latin and Greek Roots when decoding vocabulary. They are truly Reading Olympians! As part of the celebration, they watched the Disney movie, Hercules and enjoyed snacks from Mount Olympus. Thanks to some pretty awesome parents, they were able to sample nectar, share grapes, and taste trident shaped bread sticks. Later in the day they participated in Olympic Style relays, races, and javelin (pool noodle) tosses.

The Third Grade Reading Guarantee

Check out this video on YouTube:

http://www.youtu.be/v2GEJJAXWEE

Recent legislation strengthened the longstanding Third Grade Guarantee (once called the Fourth Grade Guarantee) to give a greater emphasis to reading instruction and intervention in the early grades. Through this initiative, school districts and community schools will diagnose reading deficiencies in students at grades kindergarten through three, create individualized reading improvement and monitoring plans, while also providing intensive reading interventions.

ODE also created a section on its website to serve as a collection of resources for administrators, educators, and parents. Additional resources will be added as more information becomes available. To view these resources, go directly to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee page or visit ODE’s website at www.education.ohio.gov and search “Third Grade Reading Guarantee.”

Schools must develop a reading improvement and monitoring plan for students identified with a reading deficiency within sixty days after receiving a student’s diagnostic results, beginning the 2012-2013 school year.

Phantom Tollbooth Themed Celebration

Here's a link to our Phantom Tollbooth Party video: http://animoto.com/play/eWZnCUpPMcy0hINqDaMjDQ

Fourth grade students in Mrs. Edie and Mrs. Ski's classes held their 2nd Grading Period Reward Day with a themed celebration based on The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster.

The book was a classroom read aloud through which they learned about character analysis, figurative language, plot development, and word play based on homophones.  For example, the main character, Milo meets a "which".  People had forgotten she decided "which" words should be used and had begun to think of her as a "witch".  They learned about quests as a theme in literature as well as how to analyze the ways a character changes from the beginning to the end of a novel.

Phone Book Recycling

We are happy to announce Damascus Elementary has once again been invited to participate in Project ReDirectory.  Please recycle your unwanted phonebooks in the back of the Damascus Building by April 30th.   Phone books collected will reduce waist to our landfills while bringing positive recognition to our school.  Students work hard all year and learn responsibility through the importance of caring for the environment.  The event is sponsored by YP and the Mahoning County Green Team.   Thank you in advance for your cooperation and willingness to support Damascus Elementary and our environment.

2015 School Calendar Adopted

The adoption of a school calendar is a difficult decision that cannot make everyone happy. The decision has to incorporate the needs for students and the needs of families. We surveyed our kids, through Google survey, and know that about 15% of our kids have projects or animals at the fair. A committee of 15 worked through several meetings to come up with the best decision possible for all parties. Labor Day is late (Sept 7, 2015) which made the decision more difficult. We  knew that we needed to be closed during the fair; yet with state demands, we needed additional instructional days earlier.  Our 2015 - 2016 calendar attempts to accomplish both while giving families time together at the holidays.  The calendar is pretty consistent with most schools in our county.

Science in Action at Damascus Elementary!

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."

Students in Mrs. Dattilio and Mrs. Edie’s 4th grade science classes have been hard at work discovering that there are many aspects of weather that can be measured.  To wrap up this Ohio Science Standard, students chose one of the weather instruments that they learned about to research, design, build and test.  The students took an engineering approach to completing this 6 phase project.

Changes to Physical Education in Ohio

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, a physical education evaluation will be included as an indicator on the Local Report Card. Senate Bill 210 (SB 210), which was signed into law in June 2010, includes four components that will make up a report card indicator. The goal of this legislation is to ensure consistency of teaching and learning outcomes in public schools physical education.

As required by SB 210, Damascus Elementary will measure student success in second grade to see if they are meeting the benchmarks contained in the Physical Education Academic Content Standards.  Parents need not worry as these benchmarks are not to be used in determining grading.  Students will be evaluated again in future grades at West Branch Local Schools.  The results will be available at the end of the year if you wish to see your child(s) benchmarks.  If you have any questions feel free to call or e-mail Mr. Tucker.

COSI COMES TO DAMASCUS ELEMENTARY

Students at Damascus Elementary School enjoyed learning science through engaging activities with COSI on Wheels on March 26th. The topic learned was “The Incredible Human Machine”. The program taught students what it takes to keep their “engines” in tip-top shape. They learned about the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems as well as about nutrients and how exercise keeps a body healthy. COSI on Wheels is an inquiry based program that introduces dynamic science topics to schools. After the 45 minute introduction student assembly, students participated in 30-45 minute hands-on experience in which the topics explored were learned with greater depth. All of the COSI on Wheels programs help to reinforce the Science Inquiry standards set by the State of Ohio.

We are grateful and appreciate all parent Partners In Education (PIE) who made the day possible for the children. The continued support from the PIE allows children to participate in opportunities they would not otherwise have been afforded. The children appeared to greatly enjoy the day of learning.

A Message from Mr. Bowen

Over the past five years I have had the opportunity to serve the West Branch Community and to interact positively with staff, community members, parents, and, most importantly, children.  It is with great anticipation that I announce my acceptance of The Superintendent of Schools in Campbell, Ohio, beginning August 1, 2013.

In reflection, many changes have occurred thanks to the dedicated staff and supportive community working together to provide the best opportunities for our children.  I am proud of all of the hard work and the commitment to education which exist throughout the District.  I am a better person today for the experiences afforded to me in the West Branch Community.

I look forward to the upcoming months at Damascus.  The staff continues to set high expectations for our learners as they engage children in high interest activities.  We have many enjoyable experiences planned this spring for the students in cooperation with the PIE.  Please trust that every effort will be made to guarantee a smooth transition for staff, community, and children as the School District begins the elementary principal search process.

Thank you again for your cooperation and support over the past five years.  I will forever cherish the memories that I take from the West Branch Local Schools.

Bullying Prevention

The following information will help clarify how to define bullying, what to do if you or someone you know is being bullied, and how to help prevent it from happening.  (Some of the information listed below is from Stopbullying.gov, a federal government website managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.)

What is bullying?
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among children.  The behavior is repeated over time; it is not considered a one-time occurrence.  Usually, kids who bully are using power to harm others.

What do I do if I am bullied?

Kindergarteners Skype to South Africa

Kindergarten students at Damascus Elementary engaged in a Skype activity with a classmate who is currently visiting family in South Africa.  Students researched and learned about people, animals, geography and culture.  The children created questions to further their learning about South Africa.  They asked their classmate about the weather, the length of the flight, and the language spoken in the country.  The children were also interested in the currency used.  They were very excited to see wildlife pictures on the paper bills called rands.

PARCC’s Next Generation Assessments

Beginning in 2014 - 2015 School Year

State leaders in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness of College and Careers share one fundamental goal: building their collective capacity to dramatically increase the rates at which students graduate from high school prepared for success in college and the workplace

PARCC’s next-generation assessment system will provide students, educators, policymakers and the public with the tools needed to identify whether students — from grade 3 through high school — are on track for postsecondary success and, critically, where gaps may exist and how they can be addressed well before students enter college or the workforce.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART EVENT AT DAMASCUS ELEMENTARY A SUCCESS!

On March 1, students in 3rd and 4th Grade at Damascus Elementary jumped all over heart disease and stroke by participating in Jump Rope For Heart. The students raised $1,948 dollars for the American Heart Association, which funds research, programs and education to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers.  Students worked on jumping rope and learning about the benefits of exercise for lifelong fitness.  Special “Thanks” to all who donated to a great cause.

Jump Rope for Heart is a program that promotes physical activity and heart health through jumping rope. It is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Those Who Can Do!

The roles have reversed in fourth grade!  Students in Mrs. Edie and Mrs. Dattilio’s fourth grade science classes have had an introduction to the field of teaching by putting together a lesson as an introduction to an upcoming unit on how our earth has changed.  Each teaching team was assigned a topic such as weathering of rock, erosion, deposition by glaciers, wind or water.  The students spent several days gathering knowledge from different resources to use in a smart board presentation that they would teach to the class. The “teachers” uploaded videos, pictures and online games to be used to help get their information across to their “students”.   Each presentation engaged their friends in a fun and creative way.  This lesson leads up to many hands-on experiments and activities that will be taught in the coming weeks in class!   They did an awesome job of laying a solid foundation to be built upon by their regular classroom teachers!

Powerful Partnership with Kent State Salem

Educational Psychology

Spring 2013

Aspiring teachers from Kent State University, Salem campus, will again observe in the spring of 2013, and participate in classroom lessons and activities at Damascus Elementary.  The goal of the field experience is to allow future educators to see how the theory learned in textbooks is applied in a real classroom environment.  Additionally, Kent students will be working side-by-side with our professional educators assisting with classroom activities.  Needless to say, the experience is a great learning opportunity for professional development that has never been available to Kent Salem students previous to the fall of 2012.

How Our Earth Has Changed!

Fourth grade science students in Mrs. Edie’s class are investigating how our earth has changed over time.  Presently, they are learning how these changes have slowly shaped and reshaped the surface of our planet.  This week students are completing experiments in which they will discover how freezing water, temperature changes, blowing wind and running water can break down rock into smaller and smaller pieces.  These processes take thousands of years, but the students are able to see these changes through the hand-on experiences in class.

Damascus Community Spotlight
Mrs. Eleanor Carver has been overseeing the Damascus Spelling Bee since 1999. She taught grades Two, Four, Five, and Jr. High in the West Branch School District for 30 years. Since her retirement 26 years ago, she has continued to dedicate herself to the students here in the community. Mrs. Carver, on a weekly basis, still works one-on-one with our children by helping them become better readers and writers. On behalf of the children and staff, we offer our sincere thanks to Mrs. Carver for kindness and love given to the children over the years.
West Branch Schools Always Growing

The West Branch Local Schools, rated Excellent with Distinction, is going through the (OIP) Ohio Improvement Process.  The process uses data to design and implement two focused priorities for our district.  The district is a GREAT organization, but great organizations stay on top by always improving.  The (DLT) District Leadership Team is comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, and board members.  The group will serve as an advisory council to assist in making recommendations to Dr. Weingart and the School Board.  The short, five minute video will give some insight into the process from some of the participants!  The video was filmed and edited by Mr. Terrence Grimm from the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.   The Warrior logo is the design of Mr. Steve Mountz, West Branch High School Art Instructor.

Damascus Wax Museum

Third grade social studies students and select grade four students recently completed a research project on historical people in society.  Children researched their historical person using technology and reference materials from the library.  A report was written in class focusing on proper research writing techniques.  As a culminating activity, the students invited family and friends to a “Wax Museum” at the school.  Children dressed as their historical person and presented the information that they learned to all guests in attendance.   Also, students had a QR code visible for visitors to scan with their smart phones.  Additional information relating to their historical person was made available on the web.  The night ended with refreshments and cookies in the Damascus cafeteria.

Creative Creations to Catch a Leprechaun

This week kindergarten students studied about leprechauns. Students watched a few videos about leprechaun traps and discovered how the traps work. The children collaborated in small groups to create and set their leprechaun traps.

When students arrived to school on Friday, they discovered, the leprechaun had messed up the classrooms, left foot prints, and destroyed the traps!  He left behind two pots filled with necklaces and gold coins. The leprechaun also went into the library and left a big bowl and a note describing how to make magic powder. The magic powder turned green when milk was added. Students refrigerated the recipe for one hour and later enjoyed the delicious treat!! Students didn't catch the leprechaun, but will try again next year!

School-based Fluoride Mouthrinse Thank You Mrs. Kutz

Tooth decay is the most widespread, chronic childhood disease and often requires extensive and costly repair. The use of fluorides, both ingested and applied directly to the teeth, helps prevent tooth decay. The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) sponsors a school-based fluoride mouthrinse program, targeted to elementary schools in nonfluoridated communities. In 2010-11, about 30,400 students at 134 schools participated. With parental consent, children rinse with a 0.2 percent solution of neutral sodium fluoride for one minute each week.

21st Century Skills-Collaborating, Communicating, and Creating with West Boulevard Elementary in Boardman, Ohio

Mrs. Kibby and Mrs. Hannay are co-teaching a biography unit in their Language Arts' classes this month. The students are reading biographies, creating posters, and sharing information about famous people.  As an extension, the students are skyping with penpals from West Boulevard Elementary School in Boardman, Ohio where Mrs. Kibby's husband teaches Kindergarten.

Revolutionary Rockers

Ohio's New Learning Standards for Social Studies require students in Grade 4 to learn that "the 13 colonies came together around a common cause of liberty and justice, uniting to fight for independence during the American Revolution and to form a new nation."

Students in Mrs. Scofinsky's Social Studies classes have been singing along to parodies of famous rock songs while learning this standard.  In the picture above, they are singing along to a parody of "Apologize" by One Republic, a popular break-up song.  The metaphor illustrated is that the colonists were essentially breaking up with Great Britain.

Click here for a link to the actual song.

Another metaphor that was illustrated through song shows the colonists as rebellious teens acting against the will of King George, the parent.  In order to demonstrate this, they sang a parody of Twisted Sister's 80's rock anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It".

Akron Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Cares Community Giving Program

Damascus Elementary is fortunate to collaborate with Akron Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Cares Community Giving Program.  We recently received a grant for a program that will offer noncompetitive activities to promote health, fitness, good eating habits, and safe and gradual weight loss. The program, intended to assist and encourage children from kindergarten through age 18, has been successful at the Akron Children’s main campus. These issues are important because the childhood obesity rate has skyrocketed nationwide.  The program will be used throughout physical education classes at Damascus Elementary School.  Damascus Elementary would like to “Thank” Akron Children’s Hospital and the Kohl’s Cares Program.  Melody Case, Wellness Specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley states, “We are very proud to be able to offer this program at Damascus Elementary and we thank Mr. Tucker and Mr. Bowen for allowing for this collaboration, and for all your support now, and in the future.”

Community Walkers Help Recycle!

Damascus residents, Mrs. Lee Kuentz and Mrs. Val Knoedler, gather recyclable items on their daily walks around the Damascus community.  While they walk each day for enjoyment and exercise, they look for discarded items, such as cans, paper, and plastic.  They then bring these items to the school to be recycled.  They have been walking and caring for their local community for about 12 years. When Mrs. Knoedler was asked about recycling she stated, I was “trained” by Mrs. Dattilio to recycle.  Together, they walk five days a week and when the weather is poor, they walk inside the Damascus Friends Church.  Both Mrs. Kuentz and Mrs. Knoedler have children who graduated from West Branch.  The staff greatly appreciates them and their continued support in the school and community.

The Damascus community has been recognized for recycling efforts with support from the Mahoning County Green Team. Four EPA awards shine in the school’s trophy case. Also, three ATT phone book awards and many Cash for Cans awards. Currently, we are involved in applying for another award for our paper recycling.  We recycle plastics #1-#7, batteries, aluminum cans, steel cans, paper, telephone books, ink cartridges, food waste, cell phones, plastic lids, drink pouches, and eyeglasses.

2nd Grade Students Become Teachers

The students in Mrs. Cushman’s 2nd grade class participated in a lesson in which they were the teachers! Each pair of students was given an “I can” statement from the common core standards. They then developed a lesson to prove that they could demonstrate the standard or “I can” statement that was covered. When they were finished they presented their lesson to the rest of the class using various materials and the smart board. The students did an outstanding job teaching the lessons.

Outside Recess

Appropriate clothing must be worn by all students. Children need to come to school with warm coats, gloves, hats, and boots. Students will participate in outdoor recess in temperatures that include wind chill above 20 degrees. If you are in need of warm winter clothing please contact Mrs. Umberger, Mrs. Wiant, or Mr. Bowen directly.
Career Interests with Open Conversations at Home!

As school counselor, Miss Crawford’s job encompasses a child’s social/emotional, academic, and career needs.  It is never too early to start addressing careers with our young students!  At this age, the main purpose is to introduce students to a variety of jobs, start brainstorming options that interest them, and begin goal-setting for plans in and out of the classroom.  Miss Crawford currently visits K-4 classrooms to discuss career-related topics with them.  She meets with students individually and in groups, she also enjoys teaching classroom lessons throughout the year in order to become acquainted with all of the students!

We encourage you to make career an open conversation at home!  There are many books available at the local library, in addition to resources on the Internet.  Miss Crawford’s homepage also provides information and links that may be helpful for your family.  Her website can be found under the teacher tab.

What Would We Do Without Her?

What Would We Do Without Her?  That's a question Mrs. Dattilio and Mrs. Hannay have been asking themselves for fifteen years. Mrs. Barb Lippiatt has been a volunteer beginning at Goshen Center in 1998 and currently volunteers at Damascus Elementary. Weekly, Mrs. Lippiatt listens to book reports and reads students' journals.  She assists students in Math and Language Arts through one-on-one tutoring. She also helps children with make-up work when they were absent.

Mrs. Lippiatt is a Salem graduate and her children and grandchildren attended West Branch Local Schools. She worked in Salem as an office manager for 27 years. Mrs. Lippiatt’s other interest include a love of reading which she shares with the students she assists.

Whether it's rain, snow, sleet, or hail, Mrs. Lippiatt engages students every Tuesday! We recognize Mrs. Lippiatt for all of the hours she has given to our students. She has made a difference in the lives of many West Branch students and staff.

Happy Birthday George Washington!

Students in Mrs. Ross's class created hats and portraits of George Washington to honor our 1st president.  George Washington's Birthday is celebrated as a federal holiday on the third Monday in February. It is one of eleven permanent holidays established by Congress.  Children also made Lincoln Log Cabins as they learned about another famous president Abraham Lincoln.  Thank you to our parent volunteers Mrs. Buehler and Mrs. Reynolds!

Students Become Authors and Illustrators.

Over the past few weeks in Mrs. Scott’s classroom, the students along with their parents wrote and illustrated a Clean Your Room student titled book.  After reading the story Clean Your Room Harvey Moon by Pat Cummings, children engaged in discussions about the role of authors and illustrators and how they must work together to create a story. When students created their books they learned the importance of aligning illustrations and words of a story. They included characters, setting, and plot in each book while learning to sequence story elements. The books were then shared in class and enjoyed by everyone.

We would like to “THANK” the parents for all their support with this project. The books were wonderful and the students were very proud of their accomplishments. Please visit and read the stories displayed in the halls outside of the classroom.

Students Realizing the Need for Good Vision

The Case of Vinny Vision

Thank you Dr. Mackall!

Students in grades three and four participated in a 45 assembly from the Ohio Optometric Association.  The presentation taught students about eye health and safety from our very own Dr. Mackall. In the interactive story, The Case of Vinny Vision, a detective engages students to solve an optical illusion mystery using a "case packet." Concepts presented included eye safety, the vision process, symptoms of eye disorders and the importance of eye exams.  The program was fully funded by the Ohio Department of Health Save Our Sight.

COSI On Wheels is Coming Soon!

Damascus Elementary School is excited to announce that COSI is coming to our school on March 26th. The topic they will be sharing with the students is “The Incredible Human Machine”.  This program teaches students what it takes to keep their “engines” in tip-top shape.  They will also be learning about the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems as well as about nutrients and how exercise keeps a body healthy.  COSI on Wheels is an inquiry based program that introduces dynamic science topics to schools.  The COSI on Wheels school program is a highly energetic 45 minute program that delivers scientific information in an engaging and entertaining way.  After the 45 minute introduction, students then participate in a 30-45 minute hands-on experience in which the topic is explored in more depth.  All of the COSI on Wheels programs help to reinforce the Science Inquiry standards set by the State of Ohio.  Schedule
