Charity Project

charity

Mrs. Lesnett’s Freshman Honors English students at West Branch High School recently completed their annual second semester Charity Project.  Every student selects a charity of his/her choice and plans a course of action to raise money for that charity. At the end of the semester, students create a one minute public service announcement which they show to their class along with an oral presentation of their charity. All students complete an anonymous application and essay that explores the charity and its impact on their lives.  Six finalists are selected and their applications submitted to a judges panel consisting of Mr. Brian Coffee, principal, and retired teachers Mrs. Christy Biery and Mrs. Susan Hartzell. The top three entrants are interviewed by the panel and the winning order selected.  This year’s winners and charities include: Samantha Plocher in first place with Hospice of Dayton in memory of her aunt, Abie Davis in second place with Charity Ball that provides soccer balls around the world, and Mario Chick in third place with Austism Speaks. Mrs. Lesnett donates to their charities accordingly. Collectively, students in both classes have raised over $10,000 for charity this year.

West Branch Launches Mobile App

Screen Shot 2017-04-17 at 8.03.52 AM.png

In an effort to improve communication the West Branch Local School District is providing parents, students and community members with a new way to stay connected with the schools. The district launched a free mobile app on April 27, 2017. This app allows users to receive customizable school news, school building and district calendars, push notifications, texts messages and more - all directly on their smartphone and mobile devices.

The “West Branch Local School District” app is available for download for iPhone and Android users in the App Store, and the online iTunes and Google Play app stores.  Parents are not required to download the app to continue to receive school communications, but app users have access to a number of tools that will make those communications more convenient.

Designed to make it more convenient and easier than ever for parents and families to stay informed the mobile app offers a regularly updated feed of important school news and events.  Users can customize the app by selecting the schools they are most interested i for news and updates. Users can also choose to receive push notifications to quickly get news and updates about school closures and emergencies, events and more.

It is our belief that our students are more successful in school when parents are engaged in their learning and school activities. With our new mobile app, individuals can stay connected with our schools and with the activities our students are engaged in every day.

Renaissance Faire

  faire             faire

English 9 students in Miss Wallace's class spent the month of December researching and writing formally about a topic of their choice from the Renaissance time period in order to understand Shakespeare's England. Students then transformed their research into an interactive project that was presented at their Renaissance Research Faire on December 21st. Other classes, parents, and administrators visited the faire and took part in the experience. Students also dressed from the time period and English 9 students Reece Berger and Rachel Vickers were chosen as this year's Renaissance King & Queen. Students participated in cross-curricular activities in Mrs. Smith's science class where they performed alchemy by turning copper into gold in their Gold Penny Lab and took their notes on Copernicus with quill and ink. WB Alumni visits English 9 Classes to share insights

                         ken smith

West Branch Alumni Ken Smith visited Miss Wallace’s freshmen English classes to lead a discussion on education during the Renaissance as part of their Renaissance Research Project. Students have been working diligently to research a subject of their choosing from the Renaissance in order to write their first formal research paper and learn about the world Shakespeare lived in through the process. After turning in their papers this week, students will use their knowledge to create an interactive project so that they can put on a Renaissance Faire December 21st and 22nd. The goal is to transform their knowledge into an interactive experience that other classes can enjoy as they participate in the Renaissance Faire throughout the day.

Mr. Smith (who has a B.A. in Animal Science and World History and Master degrees in Animal Welfare and Behavioral Psychology & Counseling from Ohio State University and Cincinnati) was a participant in theater and has spent a lot of time studying/experiencing Shakespearean theater. It was a great opportunity for him to share his knowledge of how education was perceived during Shakespeare’s time in Renaissance London. Miss Wallace and her students would like to thank Mr. Smith for taking the time to visit WBHS and share his knowledge.

Band Marches in Christmas Parade

Christmas Parade                               Christmas Parade

Brrr...... It was a cold out there, but that did not stop our West Branch High School Marching Band from participating in the recent Christmas Parade held in Salem. This March, the West Branch Marching Band will travel to New York City to participate in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The Marching Band is under the direction of Mr. John Zamarelli.

Music incorporated into English Classes

Fiddling around is allowed.

West Branch Teachers have many talents, but one of their own is the 2016 Ohio State Fiddling Champion.  English Teacher, Kerry Varble uses music talents in many of her English lessons and her students really enjoy it.  Besides being licensed to teach English, she is also licensed to teach Music.  Mrs. Varble states that " All songs are essentially poetry and she uses music to teach figurative language and literary devices."  Her creative writing class did a music project where they experimented with digital music software to create tracks for a rap song and one student composed a song for a guitar.  They also did a music project where they wrote poems to accompany a piece of instrumental music or were allowed to write their own song.

Mrs. Varble and her husband, Todd, met in a blue grass band and have performed from West Virginia to Texas and everywhere in between.  They spent ten years  traveling and playing music before she decided to use her degree in English to teach.

Dylan Miller and Ian Sharp both qualified for the state wrestling tournament in Columbus after placing in the top 4 at the district tournament in Alliance. Ian led the way with a 1st place finish when he pinned his opponent in the finals to capture the district championship. Dylan wrestled a tough go to match in the consolation semi finals after suffering a close loss and placed fourth.
Once in Columbus both wrestlers represented West Branch very well. Ian and Dylan both came up short of their goals and look forward to getting back there next year to finish what they started. Dylan looks forward to working hard in the off season, whereas, Ian will be recovering from an injury he sustained earlier in the year but continued to wrestle. Once he is healthy he will begin to work on returning to the state tournament to accomplish his goal.

FFA Outdoors

FFA students at West Branch High School took advantage of the warming spring weather and headed to the woods for some outdoor learning time. Students learned how to tap maple trees, collect sap, and turn the watery sap into delicious maple syrup.  The students used an old drill to make a 2 inch hole in 10 different maple tress throughout the woods.  They inserted spikes using a wooden mallet and hung the buckets to collect sap for 4 days.  At the beginning of each class period, students went to the woods and collected their sap in food grade containers that were stored in a refrigerator.   After gathering about 20 gallons of sap, students boiled their sap over an oven burner for several days in a row, until the sap became thick and light brown in color.  About 1/2 gallon of syrup was made, and students plan to share their syrup with other classes in the school district.

FFA Enjoys Successful Trip

Eleven West Branch FFA students spent a sunny week in Fort Worth, Texas during the first few days of February.  FFA members Sami Stryffeler, Katie Stowe, Madison Pidgeon, Andrew Hrusovski, Anthony Ginnetti, Kira Sharp, Ellie Elasivich, Kyle Wade, Taylor Snyder, Jesse Elasivich, and Rod Headland all traveled together with their advisors Greg Sharp and Rebecca Zeisler to the Lone Star State to participate in the Fort Worth Stockshow and Rodeo activities.

While in Texas, students spent one day paired with another student at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas.  FFA members attended all classes with their partner during the day and were given a tour of the agricultural facilities that the Texas FFA members operate. West Branch FFA members also attended the Fort Worth Stockshows, one of the largest steer and hog shows in the United States, and attended a rodeo.  Before heading back to the airport students were able to spend time at the Historical Fort Worth Stockyards, learning about the history of cattle drives and the beef industry.  FFA members look forward to traveling to another state to learn about agriculture again in the near future.

Join the Warpath . . . Donate Today

The Warpath Athletic Renovations Committee is a collaborative effort in the West Branch Local School District among parents, community members, business leaders and the West Branch Board of Education. This year, West Branch is partnering with #GivingTuesday, an international day of giving.

West Branch is currently undergoing a multi-phase project that will ultimately allow for a renovated stadium and athletic complex, located next to West Branch High School.  With the completion of Phase 1, Phase 2 of the renovations will include upgrading the existing bleachers to more functional seating, with handicap accessible access.  Also, a new, more advanced scoreboard, with video display, will be added for better viewing by all at athletic events.

With the growth of the athletic programs, the continued maintenance of the athletic facilities is a necessity in the years to come in order to see these programs' continual success. The financing and support can be completed by donors like you!  Taking place this year on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, #GivingTuesday reminds people about the importance of giving by inspiring them to improve their communities and support causes.

By donating to the Warpath in support of these upgrades, you are helping improve thousands of students, parents, community members and guests experience.  Show your warrior pride and donate today.   We’ve joined the Warpath… Will you?

The West Branch Local Schools cannot go to hours until the 2016 - 2017 school year. Some school districts have transitioned to hours this year due to starting a new collective bargaining agreement.

According to the Record Courrier (1/6/15)..."The change in state law from days to hours does not apply to school districts with collective bargaining agreements that were executed prior to July 1, 2014."

This means that the closure for 2/20/15 means another make-up day.

Click below for the district calendar adotped in February 2014 for make-up details. The district can add June 4th or look at extending days.  For those districts on days, the state allots FIVE calamity days!

Renaissance Faire

Miss Wallace and Mr. Moyer's Freshmen Language Arts classes put on a Renaissance Faire to showcase their research topics from their Renaissance research papers they wrote. Students created their own costumes, made presentation materials and held exhibits for other classes to walk through and participate in. The entire freshmen team of teachers was involved in the project, making this unit a cross-curricular learning experience. Students worked with Mrs. Smith to learn about alchemy and Renaissance science by doing the gold penny lab (they also had to take their notes with quills and ink one day!), Mrs. Sharp talked to students about the trajectory of catapults in math, Mr. Thomas led the students through a geography game about the plague and helped students research for their essays, Mr. Martin talked students through Renaissance first aid and his students provided medical care during the jousting tournament, and Mr. Edie presided over the jousting tournament in the gym during the lunch periods. Students were immersed in Renaissance research and culture over the past two weeks in order to prepare them for the world of Shakespeare and his plays, which they will begin working with after Christmas break. ?

WEST BRANCH LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HOST “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT”

Looks can be deceiving.
That’s the message behind a unique traveling exhibit created by the Bath and Copley Township Police Departments. The display is called “Hidden in Plain Sight.” The departments constructed what appears to be at first glance the bedroom of the average teenager.  But amidst the clutter of clothing scattered on the floor, school supplies on a desk and personal care products on a vanity are more than 150 items that can actually be signals that a young person could be involved in risky, dangerous and even illegal activity.

“Hidden in Plain Sight” will be on display at West Branch Middle School, 14409 Beloit Snodes Rd., Beloit, OH 44609 on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.  Doors open for browsing at 6:00 PM with a presentation from 6:15 PM to 8:15 PM.   The exhibit is open to adults only.   There is no charge for admittance.

The audience is encouraged to explore and interact with items in the display which may be indicative that a teenager is involved in substance abuse, underage drinking, eating disorders, sexual activity and more.  Participants will be enlightened, educated and astonished.

The Goshen Police Department will also be involved in presenting the exhibit.  For further information, contact West Branch Middle School at (330)938-4300.

Freshman Honors English Charity Project

Students in Mrs. Lesnett’s Freshman Honors English classes recently completed their charity projects.  Each student conducted fundraising for the charity of his/her choice, completed an application with essay, created a public service announcement, gave a speech, and wrote a business letter for donating the money raised. Six students were selected as finalists by Mrs. Lesnett and their anonymous applications and essays were reviewed by a panel consisting of Mr. Brian Coffee, principal, Mrs. Leigh Ann Martin, district librarian, and Mrs. Susan Hartzell, gifted teacher. The panel interviewed and ranked the top three of six finalists to which Mrs. Lesnett and members of the panel donated.  Congratulations to the students in the two Honors English classes who collectively raised $9,185.00.  The student who raised the most money this year was Jordan Brown.

In this picture are the top six finalists.  The charity for each of these students is listed next to the name. Seated in the first row from left to right are Jordan Brown in first place (Pilot Dogs), Zoie Bailey in second place (Shriner’s Hospital for Children), and Madison Definbaugh in third place (Autism Speaks). Standing from left to right are Amanda Dean (National Alliance of Mental Health), Emma Griffith (Big Reach Center of Hope), Kailee Gibbons (Stomp Out Bullying) and Mrs. Adrienne Lesnett, teacher.

One Book One Community

West Branch High School participates in One Book One Community each spring.  This event is a joint venture between Rodman Public Library, The Greater Alliance Foundation, The Alliance Review, and the University of Mount Union.  This year’s author is Mr. Robin Yocum, and his book is titled The Essay.  The story is set in the Appalachians of southeastern Ohio and features a 17-year old boy who belongs to a dysfunctional and desperately poor family.  He wins an essay contest, but his English teacher must go to great lengths to defend his ability to write to the rest of the community.  Mr. Yocum will be speaking to students in Mrs. Kidd’s and Mrs. Lesnett’s classes on Friday, March 21st in the auditorium.  Students from Sebring will also be in attendance.

Our students were asked to submit their own essay – similar to that of the protagonist, Jimmy Lee.  Avery Polinori’s essay was selected for submission to The Alliance Review. Please read his essay and that of runner-up, Destanee O’Neil, on this web page.  If anyone would like to borrow a copy of this book, please see Mrs. Kidd or Mrs. Lesnett.

Thank You Moms!
Thank you to all the women that are a significant influence on our children.  They may be mom, grandma, aunt, sister, or cousin!  Thank you guardians for making a difference!

What 'Mother' Means

M... is for the million things she gave me,

O... means only that she's growing old,

T... is for the tears she shed to save me,

H... is for her heart of purest gold;

E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,

R... means right, and right she'll always be.

Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me

Statewide Testing Information
Ohio testing continues to change as we move throughout the year. Ohio students will no longer be taking the PARCC exams. All testing will happen through AIR, the American Institute of Research. This is good news for our students as they only need to learn one testing interface to complete the assessments. Testing time has also been reduced to better meet the needs of our schools.

The Power Point information below is from the Ohio Department of Education and explains the changes with testing. Please see your building's principal if you have any questions.

What do we do on a waiver day?

ALICE

All building staff attended a 3 hour workshop on how to deal with an active shooter. Differentiating Instruction

All teaching staff attended a 3 hour workshop to assist in strategies to meet the needs of all students in a classroom.  The workshop was taught by Dr. Lisa Dieker from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Dieker had a busy week.  She went from Orlando to New York City to be with the Cast of Sesame Street before joining us!

On Saturday May 18 27 West Branch Teachers attended a workshop focusing on co-teaching strategies from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM.  Their dedication exemplifies why this community chooses to send their kids to our schools.  Teaching is not an 8 – 3 job.  Teaching is a passion!!!!!!

Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities

Ohio weather is very unpredictable and we never know how many calamity days our school district will use.  Currently, the State of Ohio permits five calamity days that do not have to be made up.  In addition to these five days, West Branch has been granted an additional three days known as “Blizzard Bag” make up days.  According to current state guidelines, we are able to make up an additional three days by using “Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities.”

As of January 31, 2014, West Branch has exceeded the five calamity days allotted by the State and we are using Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities to make up work.  As of January 31, 2014, Knox students need to complete two blizzard bag day activities.  All other West Branch students need to complete one day of Blizzard Bay/Calamity Day activities.

Teachers have posted Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities on their web pages.  Students will have two weeks from the date of the school closure to complete the Blizzard Bag/Calamity Day Activities.  Students who do not have access to the internet from home, will receive their “Blizzard Bag” assignments when they return to school.  If parents have questions or concerns, please contact the principal of your child’s school.

Also, our students learned about the Bourgogne region;known for it's glazed tiles and the city of Dijon;known for its Dijon mustard. PARCC’s Next Generation Assessments

Beginning in 2014 - 2015 School Year

State leaders in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness of College and Careers share one fundamental goal: building their collective capacity to dramatically increase the rates at which students graduate from high school prepared for success in college and the workplace

PARCC’s next-generation assessment system will provide students, educators, policymakers and the public with the tools needed to identify whether students — from grade 3 through high school — are on track for postsecondary success and, critically, where gaps may exist and how they can be addressed well before students enter college or the workforce.

Maurice Clarett shares his story

Recently Maurice Clarett, former running back for the Ohio State Buckeyes 2002 National Championship team and a 3rd round draft pick of the Denver Broncos appeared at West Branch High School to speak with Middle and High School students about his life and how making bad decisions affected his future.

Over 1300 students and staff members were on hand in the old gym to hear Maurice's story.  Don't let poor decisions or negative influences dictate your future.  Make good decisions, listen to people willing to help and reach your full potential.  This message goes out to all ages, not just students.  You have control over the impact you will make in your own life and the lives of others!

West Branch Schools Always Growing

The West Branch Local Schools, rated Excellent with Distinction, is going through the (OIP) Ohio Improvement Process.  The process uses data to design and implement two focused priorities for our district.  The district is a GREAT organization, but great organizations stay on top by always improving.  The (DLT) District Leadership Team is comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, and board members.  The group will serve as an advisory council to assist in making recommendations to Dr. Weingart and the School Board.  The short, five minute video will give some insight into the process from some of the participants!  The video was filmed and edited by Mr. Terrence Grimm from the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.   The Warrior logo is the design of Mr. Steve Mountz, West Branch High School Art Instructor.

Phone Book Recycling

We are happy to announce Damascus Elementary has once again been invited to participate in Project ReDirectory.  Please recycle your unwanted phonebooks in the back of the Damascus Building by April 30th.   Phone books collected will reduce waist to our landfills while bringing positive recognition to our school.  Students work hard all year and learn responsibility through the importance of caring for the environment.  The event is sponsored by YP and the Mahoning County Green Team.   Thank you in advance for your cooperation and willingness to support Damascus Elementary and our environment.

West Branch Graduate Receives American FFA Degree

Congratulations to Millie Austin, a 2012 graduate of West Branch High School, for receiving the American FFA Degree in November 2013.

The American FFA Degree is the highest degree you can receive in FFA.  It is also a degree that less than two percent of all FFA members receive!  This is such a huge accomplishment for Millie.  It takes countless hours of book work, individual work with farm animals and projects, and community service.

We are very proud of Millie for achieving this award.

We are pleased to announce the staff continues to seek opportunities to integrate 21st Century Skills in the classroom.  Students create, collaborate, research and explore in all grades and in varying contents.  Teachers use assessments to guide their future lessons based on students’ needs.  We maintain high expectations for all stakeholders and continue to grow as a staff. We are fortunate to have a professional staff willing to embrace the ever changing mandates in public education.  Please take time to review the  building report cards. Please take time to review the article on what responsibilities have been added to teachers since 1900.Click LEARN MORE BELOW to view building report cards and an educational article. Schedule Change.....IMPORTANT

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WEST BRANCH STUDENTS AND PARENTS

TO: West Branch Parents April 9, 2013

 FROM: Dr. Scott Weingart, Superintendent

REGARDING: Teacher In-Service Day and Two-Hour Delays

West Branch Local Schools will follow an adjusted schedule for three days in the month of May. I wanted to get this out to all parents as soon as possible to assist you in your planning.

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2013: Students will not be in session on this day. The West Branch Staff will be engaged in School Safety Training that day. This is the ALICE SAFETY TRAINING that many of our neighboring school districts are using with their staffs.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2013 AND TUESDAY, MAY 14, 2013: West Branch Local Schools will follow a Two-Hour Delay Schedule these days. The State of Ohio has mandated a number of educational initiatives and the West Branch Staff will be working on those initiatives during these two days.

We appreciate the support and understanding of our parents as we engage in these important in-services for our staff.

2015 School Calendar Adopted

The adoption of a school calendar is a difficult decision that cannot make everyone happy. The decision has to incorporate the needs for students and the needs of families. We surveyed our kids, through Google survey, and know that about 15% of our kids have projects or animals at the fair. A committee of 15 worked through several meetings to come up with the best decision possible for all parties. Labor Day is late (Sept 7, 2015) which made the decision more difficult. We  knew that we needed to be closed during the fair; yet with state demands, we needed additional instructional days earlier.  Our 2015 - 2016 calendar attempts to accomplish both while giving families time together at the holidays.  The calendar is pretty consistent with most schools in our county.

As we prepare our search for a new superintendent the School Board would like to gather information about what our staff and community believe are important qualities for a superintendent to be successful at West Branch Local Schools.

To participate in this survey just click on the link below and answer the short survey.  Information will be compiled by the County Office and should be completed by Friday, March 20, 2015.
