Arcimboldo was an Italian painter who was famous for his portraits of people made completely out of fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, etc. Arcimboldo started his art career as a stained glass designer and fresco painter in churches. Later he became a court painter, decorator, and costume designer for several royal families in Europe. Not many people remember his more traditional, religious work, but his more unusual work is known the world over!
THE PROJECT: Find some old magazines at home to make your own Arcimboldo style collage with. Your collage must be done on plain white computer paper, or better yet, a coordinating color of heavy scrapbook paper. The student samples shown are all done with pictures of food… however…. you can be creative! Your face could have a different theme, such as technology, farming, gardening, etc. Check with me first if you are unsure about whether a certain theme would work or not. Glue sticks are recommended for use on this project, as Elmer’s will cause the magazine pictures to bubble and wrinkle. As always, creativity and craftsmanship will determine the number of points you receive for this assignment. The maximum extra credit points possible are 10. Have fun!
