One Book One Community

West Branch High School participates in One Book One Community each spring.  This event is a joint venture between Rodman Public Library, The Greater Alliance Foundation, The Alliance Review, and the University of Mount Union.  This year’s author is Mr. Robin Yocum, and his book is titled The Essay.  The story is set in the Appalachians of southeastern Ohio and features a 17-year old boy who belongs to a dysfunctional and desperately poor family.  He wins an essay contest, but his English teacher must go to great lengths to defend his ability to write to the rest of the community.  Mr. Yocum will be speaking to students in Mrs. Kidd’s and Mrs. Lesnett’s classes on Friday, March 21st in the auditorium.  Students from Sebring will also be in attendance.

Our students were asked to submit their own essay – similar to that of the protagonist, Jimmy Lee.  Avery Polinori’s essay was selected for submission to The Alliance Review. Please read his essay and that of runner-up, Destanee O’Neil, on this web page.  If anyone would like to borrow a copy of this book, please see Mrs. Kidd or Mrs. Lesnett.
