New Ohio Law Mandates a Grade 3 Reading Guarantee
On July 27, 2012, the Ohio Legislature mandated that all students in Grads K-3 need to be notified in writing, if he or she is not on grade level. The law also mandates that children be given a diagnostic reading assessment in Grades k-3 to assist in determining a reading level . West Branch has given the STAR Reading Assessment as a tool to measure progress. The law mandates that by the end of 3rd Grade, a student must be on Grade Level or retained beginning in the 2013 – 2014 school year. West Branch parents are being notified in writing on Friday October 19, 2012. Teachers have called all families that will be receiving a letter on 10/19/12. Teachers will be working with students an extended period to assist in reading development. Parents are encouraged to read with their child 20 minutes nightly. All families that receive this first letter, will be notified in writing by November 30, 2012 of the interventions being used with the student.
