District -- 10/15/21

Good afternoon Warrior Families.  As a reminder, next week is a shortened week beginning with a 2 hour delay on Monday October 18, 2021 for grades k-12.  Preschool classes will be reporting at normal times on Monday the  18th with no 2 hour delay for PS classes. MCCTC students will not be counted tardy for the 2 hour delay.  However, if parents or students wish to attend at regular time, they must get their own transportation.  Otherwise they are permitted to ride our buses on the 2 hour delay schedule.  Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled for the evening of Thursday October 21, 2021 and there are no classes on Friday October 22, 2021. MCCTC buses will still run on the 22nd as MCCTC still has classes.

An update on our COVID data: Unfortunately we had an increase in positive cases at the end of this week as well as the number of students that needed to be quarantined.   Because of this, We will continue with masks for next week to monitor the data.  However, the data shows that the COVID numbers are trending on a decline and unless we experience a large increase in numbers over the next week - the mandate will be lifted at 3:30 PM on Thursday November 21.  The federal mandate for buses is still in effect regardless if our local mandate is lifted.  I will call everyone next Thursday afternoon to verify our data and plan of action.

Also, the Field Trip to the Mount Union Nature Center on Friday, October 15, is cancelled for all preschool classes and students. We hope to reschedule this field trip for a future date.

These cancellations are being made out an abundance of caution and are due to a positive case of Covid-19 that was detected in Mrs. Barkee’s classroom. All parents in Mrs. Barkee’s classes have been contacted and given the date when their child can return to class. You may contact me at the school at (330) 938-4300 with any questions.

District -- 10/8/21
Good afternoon Warrior Families.  This is Micki Egli calling with an update regarding COVID 19 data.  Currently, we have 22 active COVID-19 cases with 51 students who remain in quarantine.  Our data is showing a decline, community trend data is also showing a decline and community hospitals are showing a decline in the number of positive cases as well.  While this is a positive sign, I am fearful of lifting the mask policy too soon where we could result in a spike of quarantine numbers.  We will continue with masks for the next week and re-evaluate all the data at the end of next week. I will call with an update again by October 15, 2021.

District - 9/25/21

Good afternoon Warrior Families.  This is Micki Egli calling with information.   In the first 2.5 weeks of school, we have had 34 positive student cases, 10 positive staff cases, and have quarantined 161 students.   Looking at information from last school year, we didn’t have 34 positive student cases until January and we didn’t quarantine 161 students until November. We are hitting higher numbers at a much more rapid pace than we experienced previously.  Additionally, community trend data shows that these numbers will increase, not decrease over the next few weeks.

I have participated in many conversations and presentations from individuals and professionals who sit on both sides of the masking fence and I certainly am not coming to you to argue whether or not masks are effective.

As superintendent, I must make the right decision to ensure that students are educated and that teachers are able to provide that education.  After reviewing our trend data from this school year as well as historical COVID data from last year, it is apparent that the right decision is that beginning Monday September 27th masks will be required for all K-12 students and staff for all indoor activities, except lunch and PE.  Data will be reviewed every 2 weeks and an announcement will be made at that time regarding the continuance of masking.

As a result of masking, the number of students needing to be quarantined will be reduced dramatically.  Under the current ODH guidelines, students who are either masked or vaccinated do not need to be quarantined after a close contact with a positive case in the school building, as long as they remain asymptomatic.

I am fully aware that this decision is not the popular decision in our community.    However, to put it simply - we need students in school in order to educate them properly.  That is my job - to ensure that students are educated properly and providing them with masks will ensure that they are here as much as possible.

District —9-19-21

Good afternoon Warrior Families.  This is Micki Egli calling with some important information.

First and foremost, I must convey to you that making decisions this year is far more challenging than last year, as the school districts have been placed directly in the middle of a very political battle regarding COVID-19.The BOard of Ecuation and I have received requests for the district to mandate masks for all students and staff.  Additionally we have also received requests to continue to allow parents to make the decision for their families.  No matter what decision I make, it will upset someone somewhere in this community.  There is no ground where I can stand where this won’t happen.  I am moving forward collecting data and making decisions in the best interest of students based solely on that data.

  1.   I plan to continue to work with the Board of Education throughout this week as we review the data that is collected to determine the path that West Branch Local Schools will take.  The data that will be reviewed will be the following:  # of positive student cases and the number of positive staff cases, the # of students/staff quarantined, absenteeism rates both in individual buildings as well as the district as a whole, and any spread between students and/or staff within any classroom or building.

  2. The quarantine guidelines put out by the ODH state that a student who has been determined a contact within the school walls may remain in school if that student shows proof of vaccination and/or is wearing a mask.  We had previously been following modified guidelines.  However, from this point forward, the ODH guidelines will be strictly enforced.  If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me.

  3. The data we had collected as of September 17th, 2% of our student population was in quarantine, less than 1% of our student population was a positive case and 3% of our staff was considered a positive case.

  4.   As of this exact moment in time, masking continues to be optional for all students and staff.  I must state that this could change rapidly based upon the data.  I will inform families if there is any change.

  5. If you have questions regarding this, please contact me.

Intermediate -- 9/9/21

Good evening, Warriors. This is Mr. Schlueter, Intermediate School Principal, calling to remind you about the West Branch Back to School Bash that will take place from 4:30 - 6:30 outside the football stadium. There will be a dunk tank, an inflatable slide, carnival games, face painting, a petting zoo, and free hot dogs while supplies last. Following the Bash it is Elementary Night at the West Branch Football Game. All elementary students accompanied by an adult will get in the game free of charge. The elementary students will also form a tunnel for the players to pass through before the start of the game. So come out, celebrate being back in school and cheer on our Warrior football team to victory.

There are a few items to update you on:

  1.  Final Forms - This year we have a new portal we are using called Final Forms for emergency medical information and general contact information for your child.  This replaces One View that we have used in past years.  If you have NOT already created an account and updated your forms for this school year, an email was sent out on Friday to the primary parent/guardian listed for your student.  If you did not receive an email and have not created an account, please contact your building secretary to verify the email address we have on file. We would like all Final Forms completed by September 13th. If you have completed all final forms - thank you!  We appreciate your attention to this matter.
  2. Breakfast and lunch are free for all students this school year.  Even though this is in effect, we still need your application for free and reduced lunch on file. Please complete these applications in Final Forms.  If your child wants extras beyond the breakfast or lunch, they must pay for these items.  Those are not free.
  3. A $40 school fee will be added to all K thorough 12 student accounts.  Payments can be made online.  If you have any questions or you are eligible for a fee waiver, the form is available on our West Branch district web page under the parents tab and then under forms, or you can obtain this from your building secretary.
  4. Back to School Bash is this Friday from 4:30-6:30 before the home football game.  There will be carnival games, a petting zoo, fire trucks, and lots to look at and see and do. All PK-4 students will get into the game for free this evening, as it is elementary night at the game.

Young & Alive -- 8/31/21

Good evening Y & A Families.  This is Micki Egli with some information about the Disney Trip.  I need to clarify to you that several items must happen in order for a group of students to be permitted to take a trip such as the Disney trip.  First and foremost, any trip must be presented to the building principal and superintendent.  The trip then must be approved by the board of education.  Unfortunately, none of that had happened last year or over the summer.  When I was informed a few weeks ago that students were fundraising for the trip, I called Disney, Universal, the tour bus company, as well as the hotel to inquire if they would provide reimbursements if we purchased tickets and made reservations.  Unfortunately, no one was able to provide me with “yes we will 100% reimburse the district and/or the students”.  With that being said, and the uncertainty of where COVID will take us in the next few months, I cannot authorize this trip to take place.

I understand that students have been fundraising all summer and these funds are typically used for individuals and organizations to advertise at music events such as concerts and musicals.  To ease some of your concern, it is still the district’s intent to have Young and Alive as well as musical and concert productions as long as we are permitted to do so. I am asking that you hold on to any funds that you may have collected thus far (if you have turned funds in to the treasurer’s office those are being held in the student’s name).  I plan to provide more direction by the end of next week regarding the funds that have been raised and what our next steps will be

I understand this is probably not the information you wanted to hear, but I hope you understand with the uncertainty of COVID, this is the only option we can safely take at this time.  Thank you and have a good evening.
