Fourth grade students in Mrs. Edie and Mrs. Ski's classes held their 2nd Grading Period Reward Day with a themed celebration based on The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster.
The book was a classroom read aloud through which they learned about character analysis, figurative language, plot development, and word play based on homophones. For example, the main character, Milo meets a "which". People had forgotten she decided "which" words should be used and had begun to think of her as a "witch". They learned about quests as a theme in literature as well as how to analyze the ways a character changes from the beginning to the end of a novel.
The students dressed up as various characters from the book. They brought snacks to represent foods from two of the kingdoms in the story. They completed a mapping activity using cardinal and intermediate directions in order to find the various places that the main character visited in the story. They also watched the movie and had a lively discussion comparing and contrasting it to the book.
