Voice of Democracy Contest

Senior Jeremy Brown and Freshman Kirsten Plocher were honored Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 8 Voice of Democracy banquet at the VFW post in Newton Falls, Ohio. This is the first time in recent history that two students from West Branch have placed in the top five finalists at the district level.  Brown who placed third and Plocher who placed fifth recited their winning speeches to a large and patriotic crowd of veterans, state and local representatives, families, and teachers.

This national contest requires students to write and record a 3-5 minute speech on a specified theme. The theme for 2014-15 was “Why Veterans are Important to our Nation’s History and Future.” Students at West Branch and Sebring are sponsored through the Sebring VFW post 6730. Commander Terry Frasher presented checks to both students for their efforts.

Jeremy and Kirsten are students of West Branch teacher Adrienne Lesnett, who offers the contest to her students annually. The VOD theme for 2015-16 is “My Vision for America.”
